Light and Darkness – a Good Friday poem

In the beginning was the Word
The Word was with God
And the Word was God –
Mighty God
Everlasting Father
Prince of Peace

All things were made and came into existence through Him
The Bread of Life
The Good Shepherd
The true Vine
The Way
The Truth…

In Him was the light and that light was the life of men.
The Light of the world

In the deep darkness
The Light broke through
It lights our path
That we may walk in the light

Lord, You are our Light
And our salvation
Why should we fear the darkness?
And yet we do fear it

For evil lurks
And creeps into the hearts of men

For darkness knows
Our weaknesses,
Our doubts,
Our fears

We betray ourselves
And You
With words
With our actions and inactions
With a kiss

The darkness within our hearts
Sent you to the cross
Where You were beaten

The crack of whips lashed and
Tolled our transgressions

You were given a crown of thorns
Face bloodied
And mocked

All Hail King Jesus
The King of the Jews

The darkness in our hearts drove you to carry Your cross
Stumbling
Falling

Nails driven into your hands and feet
Affixed to the cross

My God
My God
Why have we forsaken you?

The darkness in our hearts
Mocks you
Laughs at you
Spits upon you
Casts lots for your clothing

The light of the world
that came to dwell among his people
Shouldered our darkness

He took his last ragged breath
And The Light Surrendered his Spirit

On this day of remembrance
We remember when the darkness washed over the land
We remember when the Light of the World was extinguished
We remember days of waiting
Uncertainty
Fear
Sorrow
Loss

And yet, we remember,
The Light shines
And the darkness cannot overcome it.
